Yes, I am Making a Difference!

Worship and dancing and crafts, oh my! VBS is such great fun, not only for kids. When I said, “Yes” to serve, I couldn’t help but join the children where they were. Through simple and profound stories, God’s truths were reinforced with songs, activities, and Christ’s love shared by volunteers in a concentrated and memorable week.

When I signed up, there was such a variety of “jobs” available (from decorating ahead of time to preparing snacks) that I simply agreed to “whatever’s needed.” Though I helped with the dance worship team last year, I was a group leader the year before, walking kids safely from one station to another, working with teen helpers, and trying to make those around me feel welcomed and seen while praying for them throughout the week.

I asked God, “Am I making a difference?” A quiet and assured, “Yes” infused me. What I do doesn’t have to shake the world. The things I remember about people making a difference in my youth and in life were humble and heartfelt gestures of care (often not recognizing it at the time, but thankful later).

At VBS, we become a community where we help each other and point children to Christ in a kid-friendly way within a focused five days. It can be a memorable “turning point” where a marker can be placed as a child’s heart is sparked with God’s glory. You can become a part of this, too, when you say, “Yes.”
